Chequered stool?

Remember the footstool?

My plan is to create a crochet cover to match my granny snuggle blanket that has hubster's approval:

This is my idea thus far:

I've made a few red and white 10 X 10 cm squares. 

I hope to create a burgundy border to join them. 

Then it will be decision time about the sides. 

Block colour?  Chequered?  Striped?  

Hmmm. 

Will cross that bridge when I come to it. 

All painting projects are on hold til this project is underway by orders of the hubster. 

Apparently its hideousness needs to be concealed ASAP?
